Week 11 Tutorial Task

10 Response to Content

Questions for discussion:

  • What is your favourite cyberpunk production- My favorite Cyberpunk production and I assume  alot of other sutudents favorite aswell is The Matrix Trilogy.
  • What is happening in Burning Chrome?-Burning Chrome" tells the story of two hackers who hack systems for profit. The two main characters specializes in software and hardware. acquires a piece of Russian hacking software that is very sophisticated and hard to trace. They decide to break into the system of a notorious and vicious criminal called Chrome, who handles money transfers for organized crime.Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Chrome
  • Is anime cyberpunk? Cyberpunk themes are widely visible in anime The exposure to cyberpunk ideas and fiction in the mid 1980s has allowed it to seep into the Japanese culture. Even though most anime and manga is written in Japan, the cyberpunk anime and manga have a more futuristic and therefore international feel to them so they are widely accepted by all. “The conceptualization involved in cyberpunk is more of forging ahead, looking at the new global culture.  Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberpunk#Anime_and_manga
  • Is cyberpunk sexist? I personally do not believe that cyberpunk is sexist all, its content does not demean women in anyway way and in some cases such as The Matrix and anime either equalizes the women ability or interactivity or gives them more involved within the role of cyberpunk.
  • Cyberpunk is thirty years old and fantasy is the clear winner in the genre stakes. What does that say about the future? As the world of technology evolves, fantasy itself may struggle to invigorate their viewers imagination. If cyberpunk creators continue to interest and sustain its audience by developing its product and technology does not grow at a rapid rate that it has been over the last 20 years cyber punk should be able to last another 30 years and beyond with the same interest it has attracted in the past.

Essay plan:

What is your topic?  The topic that was chosen was Does the extensive use of computer/video games have an adverse impact on the health of young people.

Clarify what both sides of the argument claim and only then offer your reasoned opinion based on facts.

Problems-
There is a wide range of reported negative effects of video games on health. Negative effects are usually due to prolonged excessive play of video games.  There is research that suggests that there is a link between violent games and increased aggression. Over usage of video games can cause numerous problems wfor children and adolescents addiction and real simulation are both two problems that need to be addressed in this growth of rapid technology.

Positives-
Video games have positive psychological effects as well. Certain games that are used as part of a comprehensive program can further help children and children with developmental disorders.
Studies have also shown that playing video games can improve mental faculties, such as hand-eye coordination. More intelligent games such as strategy and puzzle games can also improve problem solving, and provide intellectual stimulation as well.

What is your position? The impact that video games have on young people definantly varys from child to child, obviously violent and task master video games can have a more of a negative impact towards children than that of a sports or arcade style games.

What conclusion does that bring you to?
Video games have both positive and negative effects on health. The effects however vary immensely depending on the types of games played and the frequency of play. Certain adverse effects can be caused by other factors in conjunction with excessive play of games, but can usually be corrected by living a healthier lifestyle. Week 8 tutorial task

The progress of our production is going along smoothly, we have written the script and also created the mock twitter accounts of both Facebook and Google +. Our group has also started screen recording the conversation between Facebook and Google, although this is a relatively simple recording concept we did find some bits difficult towards linking the conversation as we required two computers and a reliant internet connection which at times was unstable.  As long as we do not defemate either group and use the video in the correct context I believe we will not have any copyright issues.

Week 8 Response To content

Where does free software come from?
Free software is software that gives you the user the freedom to share, study and modify it. We call this free software because the user is free.  free software is to make a political and ethical choice asserting the right to learn, and share what we learn with others.  Free software has become the foundation of a learning society where we share our knowledge in a way that others can build upon and enjoy

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:
  • The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  • The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
  • The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
A program is free software if users have all of these freedoms. Thus, you should be free to redistribute copies, either with or without modifications, either gratis or charging a fee for distribution, to anyone anywhere. Being free to do these things means (among other things) that you do not have to ask or pay for permission.

The freedom to use a program means the freedom for any kind of person or organization to use it on any kind of computer system, for any kind of overall job, and without being required to communicate subsequently with the developer or any other specific entity.

Week 7 Tutorial Task

As I did not attend class this week due to illness, I will report on our concept for the production. Our video concept is to incorporate social media networks within eachother. As twitter is growing by the minute, our group decided to create a mock twitter coversation between social media giants Facebook and the new but ever growing google +. Our idea is to create human like conversation between facebook and google + about the development of each organisation and the percieved reaction both may have if they were human like. As twitter is one fastest growing chat rooms available we thought it would be a good idea to utilise this in our production. We are intending to use a program called screen shot available on an Apple Macbook that has the ability to screen record our mock twitter conversation between Facbook and Google +,  the production should not have any copyright or defamation issues as all of the content is recorded by ourselves and we did not use the direct names of Facebook and Google + nor did we defemate either organisation.

Week 7 Response to content

Why does Facebook work?
There are numerous reasons why facebook is so popular and unlike many other social networking and online chat sights has no signs of slowing down. The popularity of the Internet has exploded in recent years, and it is no coincidence that social media followed soon after.  Whether it be sharing photos and events with your friend, posting your opinions or advertising your brand, what makes Facebook  so powerful is that it has its finger in almost everything. You can keep in touch your favorite business and products, sporting teams, celebritys or just have a chat with your circle of friends. Facebook has tabs available on almost every internet browser and gives you the option to friend almost any company which assist in growing their brand. I believe the key to facebook survivng and leaving many behind is the product is still simple and anyfrom from 8 to 80 can use the product with a little practise.

Week 6 Tutorial Task

eploring cheap AV production tools

This week do a short report on different production tools that you might use and explain your basic concept in one sentence.
1) how you can add elements that you have created (photos, music, video from your phone etc) into the production  - While watching a number of examples we have decided to use elements such as video and music to enhance our production. An example we watched gave us an idea to pursure, this was that of still video imaging that showed writing on the screen with a catchy song. We have decided to incorporate twitter as our video production and utilise apples screen video application to film the production.

2) Problems you may have with copyright over elements that you did not create- Problems that our group may have when doing our production, is dealing with copyright issues with both facebook and twitter. as our production is about the relationship with twitter, facebook and google+ we must "imitate the groups" without breaching copyright issues. Ways to evade an legal issuse what be to not defemate any of the organisations or use direct names of the companys involved.

3) the dangers of defamation (saying or implying something that harms another's reputation). As long as the production is undertake in the correct manner defamation should not be an issue. Our production is not aimed to harms any companys or anyones reputation it is merely to illustrate the relationship that may occur between google+ and Facebook if they were living content.

Week 6 Response to content

The internet is not some fad that the Hollywood industry can beat, it is here to stay and has no signs of slowing down. The internet now controls most of our lives with banking, emails and now movies at a click of a button. Both the Music and Film Industry has taken a hit from the internet and it s streaming ability to access almost anything available on TV or in the cinemas. Initially many worried that illegal downloads and pirating could be a massive cost to the entertainment industry, although this is still a worry many companies have begun working within the internet to give its users acces to its products online. The likes of itunes and a number of video providing websites have allowed the interent users to buy single songs and movies online at a cheap enough price that they will purchase this prouduct online rather than download it illegally.

Week 5 Response to content

In my personal opinion the film Rubber was the most bizarre and down right disturbing movie I have ever viewed. But for some reason I was not turning away from the picture, a reason behind this may have been the structure that was applied throughout them film. Rubber was obviously a very risky film to even produce, where a tyre have the presence of a serial killing human being. I believe the reason behind why this film may have worked is the use of the screenplay structure. Syd Field who writes "The Foundations of Screen Writing"  states The word itself means "to build, or put together," and understanding how it works is essential to the craft of screenwriting. Simply put, structure holds the story together.

Correct structure was vital for a film so bizarre as Rubber, Field also states the importance of the plot point from The Paradigm Worksheet which is any incident, episode or event that hooks into the action and spins it around into another direction; in this case, either Act II or Act III. I believe the plot point in the film rubber was the moment when the tyre " killed its first victims setting up the tyres intentions and them of the whole movie. Whatever someones opinion Rubber was a film that left many wondering what the writers were thinking and who would have the guts to produce such a film.

Week 4 Tutoiral Task

Tutorial Task
Choose a social networking site that you either regularly visit or know about and discuss in 200 words how you understand the Terms of Service that all users must agree to to be invited into the site.

Facebook-

When you signed up to the social network site Facebook did you read the companies terms and conditions? I can guarantee that a lot of us didn’t even think of it, myself included. Before many of us had become addicted to the social network phenomenon,  if we had the chance would we second guess joining if we knew exactly what we had signed up for. In one of facebook first line in its terms and conditions the site states "For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook".

Facebook seemingly has us wrapped around there finger when you agree to join the site you become a part of the facebook culture. The terms and conditions consist of 18 very intimate and specific points that many of us will not experience during our life time of usage.  So next time you’re on the giant social network check your rights and just exactly what facebook can do with your content.

Week 4 Response to content

Did social media cause the British Riots

Obviously social media did not cause the British riots, but I do believe it assisted in the rapid spread to other parts of the UK. After local man Mark Duggan was shot dead by police as they tried to arrest him in the north London area of  Tottenham. Some people say it's down to tension between local young people and this incident is what sent them over the edge(Guardian). Buildings and cars were burnt, shops were looted, and petrol bombs were thrown at police during a weekend of rioting.Student Jake Manu said: "The police never talk to us, they ignore us, they don't think we're human in this area." But what does the social network have to do with. The police are calling "copycat criminal activity" – some of it apparently part of an orchestrated plan which brings a very real possibility that these riots could have been spread over numerous social networks coinciding with the spread of riots over the city of London (BBC). The social network has the ability to spread anything over the Internet and it is no coincidence it could have have had a hand in the spread of the London riots.

Like a rag doll he falls back into the seat. Big slow Leon is already walking away, but he stops, turns, and with a little smile of satisfaction fires through the back of the seat.

Task 2

After the 2002 launch of Friendster, several eUniverse employees with Friendster accounts saw  the potential that social networking had created and decided to mimic the more popular features of the social networking website creating the phenomenom of myspace.

Myspace is a free online social networking site aimed towards the younger generations that composed of personal profiles that includes and lets you share chosen personal information. MySpace profiles typically includes a digital photo and in-depth information about personal interests. The main use for Myspace was for the interaction between friends that could share photos, comment on each others profiles and share various other options between each other.

Myspace became the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006, a position that it held throughout 2007 and until  the end of 2008. In the month of December 2008  the Myspace corporation attracted 75.9 million monthly unique visitors in the U.S.(Gillette F, 2011)

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp bought Myspace and its parent company, Intermix, in 2005 for $580 million. The company has recently started officially looking for a potential buyer at an asking price of $100 million, according to a person familiar with the sale process Over the past two years, Myspace has lost, on average, more than a million U.S. users a month, but why? (Watkins S, 2009)

Mismanagement, a flawed merger, and countless strategic blunders have accelerated Myspace's fall from being one of the most popular websites on earth—one that promised to redefine music, politics, dating, and pop culture—to an afterthought. And of course Facebook, a seemingly better, more initiative, easier to use social networking site that has basically demolished facebook in the competition of social networks. (Gillette F, 2011)

What will be the future:

The rise and fall of social networks has been a dramatic one, I think now social networking is an inevitable for everyone in today's society. All company's have some sought of advertising and alliance involved with social media. And whilst they still believe that it is a viable way to promote their product. The question is what is next, with Facebook and Google simply taking over the Internet, sticking their finger into everyone business you may see social networks take over the world other competitors will enter the marketing possibly offering a more an advanced and innovative ideas and concepts that could leave today's heavy hitters in the dark, what they do with their product is the big question.

week 2 Response to Content

What form of Communication Technology do you use most often? What is your favourite?

Over the years I believe peoples choice of communication changes with the evolution of technology and themselves as a person, with my personal experience and the era I was raised in has had a definite effect on the choices of communication I associate with. As a young teenager instant messaging was all the craze where you would conduct numerous simultaneous conversations with all your friends from school and sports or recreational clubs, and the uses of mobile phones or telephones was a rarity mainly used for emergency's. But as times change so do people and that includes myself.

Obviously today's mobile phone is  very different to the mobile phones used in 5- 6 years ago. Today many consider there mobile phone a necessity along with myself. The evolution of smart phones is growing at a rapid rate and you can seemingly do anything on the mobile phones of today. But will in the future the only thing you may need is a mobile phone.Today's mobile phones can already send e-mail, browse the Web, and keep you in touch with friends.  Many believe tomorrow's handsets will add even more to the menu, morphing (as needed) into always-connected portable game consoles, full-featured TVs, and credit cards (PCworld). Already I stress when I cant find my phone as I feel I need it for everything, what will the future hold for the needs of having a mobile phone.

 Tutorial Task Part 2

How you use new communication technologies to communicate with your friends and family

New communications has played a massive part of my adolescents and I believe a number of other teenagers around the globe. Ever since I was 12-13 I used the likes of msn messenger as the only means of communication with my friends. Reasons behind this was being a young teenager I obviously couldn't afford to send numerous text messages to many people. Obviously the upside of social networks and instant online messaging is it gives the ultimate luxury to talk to numerous people all at once and without the stress of either holding a conversation which we all know teenagers finding difficult and wasting our parents money on land line calls.  Obviously privacy is a very big issue within the technology industry,  joining programs such as msn messenger and facebook do have some risk with who you accept to talk to and associate with, sometimes you just don't know who it is,  especially naive teenagers. I am confident in the processes that google and facebook take in utilising information they are both established and well respected organisations. But there is always a flip slide with internet crime growing at a rapid rate and many are simply leaving themselves to be hacked.

week 1 Response to Content

How Do we Distinguish Between Old and New Technologies - It is difficult to tell where the line is drawn in the sand over the difference between old and new technologies. Is there a date or a certain moment in time where technology becomes old fashioned. In my personal opinion the decision is in the eyes of the beholder whether something is new or old. Some elderly people may think that mobile phones is a new technology compared to using a land line or even older forms of communication. Where others involved in the gen Y era would think that the standard mobile phone is old and boring technology compared to the electronic devices such as the smart phones and tablets that we see on the market today.

Gordon Moore, famously predicted that the density of microprocessors would double every 18 months and many believe it will begin to decline over the coming years (cnet). This may be true and the rate technology grows may slow,  but new technology will become old, eventually . As long as this world is still spinning, then the innovations of technology are inevitable, the places that technology can take people is certainly limitless and new technology will become old and boring and people will be champing at the bit to obtain the latest on the ever growing market.

I am a sports fanatic who enjoys any type of sport as long as there is and winner and a loser and I also enjoy spending time with my friends when im not cramming with university studies.
