Week 4 Response to content

Did social media cause the British Riots

Obviously social media did not cause the British riots, but I do believe it assisted in the rapid spread to other parts of the UK. After local man Mark Duggan was shot dead by police as they tried to arrest him in the north London area of  Tottenham. Some people say it's down to tension between local young people and this incident is what sent them over the edge(Guardian). Buildings and cars were burnt, shops were looted, and petrol bombs were thrown at police during a weekend of rioting.Student Jake Manu said: "The police never talk to us, they ignore us, they don't think we're human in this area." But what does the social network have to do with. The police are calling "copycat criminal activity" – some of it apparently part of an orchestrated plan which brings a very real possibility that these riots could have been spread over numerous social networks coinciding with the spread of riots over the city of London (BBC). The social network has the ability to spread anything over the Internet and it is no coincidence it could have have had a hand in the spread of the London riots.
